If you are pregnant or about to become pregnant, a folic acid supplement would be a good idea. Folic acid, also called folic acid, is vitamin B9 and has many important functions in the body. Especially before, during and after pregnancy, it is important to consume folic acid.

Folic acid and pregnancy
The Danish Health Authority recommends that you take a supplement of 400 mcg min. 1 month before you become pregnant and continue for 3 months after you become pregnant. Folic acid helps to prevent neural tube defects in the early fetal stage.

Why should you take folic acid?
Folic acid is very fragile, and the vitamin is easily destroyed by heating and exposure to light. It can therefore be difficult to get enough through the diet. Folic acid is particularly important, as it i.a. contributes to:

• normal tissue growth in pregnant women
• normal blood formation
• maintenance of normal mental function
• maintenance of the immune system
• normal cell division process
• to reduce fatigue and exhaustion

Studies have also shown that approx. 50% of the adult population lacks folic acid. Smokers in particular are often deficient in folic acid, and they may need up to 3 times as much folic acid as non-smokers.

It is recommended to eat folic acid together with other B vitamins, as the B vitamins have a synergistic effect on each other.
